Arno E. Schlitter, 78, of Monona died Saturday, February 6, 2010 at Gundersen-Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 9 at St. John Lutheran Church in Luana, with burial in the church cemetery with military rites.

Arno was born May 24, 1931 in rural Monona to Lester and DeLilla (Bollman) Schlitter. He was baptized in 1932 and confirmed in 1957. Arno attended #6 County School through the eighth grade. He did farm work in the area for a time until entering the United States Army in August of 1953.

He was united in marriage to Josephine Scheffert June 14, 1958 at St. John Lutheran Church in Luana. Five children were born to this union. Arno worked for Swiss Valley for 34 years. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, playing cards, bingo and fishing. His hobbies were woodworking, doing landscaping and spending time outdoors with wildlife.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine Schlitter of Monona; his children, Lonnie (Roberta) Schlitter of Fayette, Danny Schlitter of Hazleton, Darla (Mike) Eilers of McGregor, Darryl (Kaaren) Schlitter of Monona and Rodney Schlitter (friend Kris Lewis) of Garnavillo; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren; his siblings, Leo (Alice) Schlitter of Bagley, WI, Ruth (Earl) Jones of Harpers Ferry, Jim Schlitter (friend Linda Ambrose) of Luana, and Violet Long of Cresco; his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Pat Lumbus of Oelwein, Burdette and Marrol Scheffert of Independence, David and Sherri Scheffert of Oelwein, and Margaret Scheffert of Ely; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother- and father-in-law; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law.

Casketbearers were Derrick Eilers, Dillon Eilers, Wade Schlitter, Travis Carlson, Michael Cantrell, Michael Eilers, Kevin Palmer and Ralph Bacon. Honorary casketbearers were Tonya Carlson, Jessica Cantrell, Kaitlyn Schlitter and Kalysta Schlitter.
