Death of Dr. Altenkirk

Independence Conservative:
Dr. Charles Altenkirk died at his home in this city, Friday, Feb. 24, of pneumonia. Deceased was a native of Berlin, Germany, born Jan. 26, 1821. He studied medicine there, and came to America in 1842. Here he studied theology two years, at the end of which time he took up the study of medicine again, and made that his life profession. He removed to Independence from Postville, last October coming with his daughter, Mrs. J. T. Parker whose husband has been proprietor of the Gedney barber shop. The funeral occurred Sunday afternoon.

The remains of Dr. C. Altenkirck, father of Mrs. J.T. Parker, of this city, were exhumed from Independence cemetery and brought to Postville for burial yesterday.

Notes: 'Woodmansee' does not record the burial of Dr. Altenkirk in the Postville cemetery. He may not have a marker, or it is possible that his body was moved one more time, to California to be buried with his wife. (See obit of Wilhelmina Altenkirk)
