Evelyn C. Dresselhaus, 93, of McGregor, died Saturday evening, January 2, 2010 at the Great River Care Center in McGregor. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 7 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in McGregor. Friends may call one hour before services at the church. Inurnment will be at a later date this Spring.
Evelyn C. Dresselhaus was born July 31, 1916 at French Creek Township in Allamakee County. She was the daughter of Maurice and Cecilia (Howes) Regan. She graduated from Waukon High School with the class of 1934 where she also took Normal Training and received her teaching certificate. She later received her bachelors degree from Upper Iowa University.
June 30, 1941 she was united in marriage to Keith Wild at St. Mary’s Lycurgus Catholic Church. They lived in the rural Waukon area and then moved to McGregor in 1953. The couple later divorced. June 6, 1977 she married George Dresselhaus at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
Evelyn C. Dresselhaus taught school for 46 years; at first, in rural one-room schools in Allamakee and Clayton Counties, where all grades were combined and she had to keep the fire going. The final 18 years she enjoyed teaching at Mar-Mac elementary school. She retired from teaching in 1978.
Evelyn was active in the Catholic Church and was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. A special highlight was the trip she took to Ireland, the home of her ancestors, with her daughter, Eileen and her husband, Carl. She enjoyed reading and history, but most of all she loved people. She will be greatly missed by her loving family, her former students and colleagues, and her many friends.
She is survived by one daughter, Eileen (Carl) Olofson of Lake Geneva, WI; three sons, Maurice (Marie) Wild of Elmira, NY, William Wild of McGregor and Pastor Mel (Maureen) Wild of McGregor; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Keith Wild; her husband, George; a grandson, Jonathan Wild; two brothers, William and John Regan and two sisters, Helen Rowe and Mary Hodina.
