Jason Darren Kaeppel of Hawkeye died March 6, 2000 as the result of injuries sustained in a one-car vehicular accident in Cedar Falls. He was 22 years old. Jason was the son of Daren and Mary Mathis Kaeppel of rural Hawkeye.

Funeral service was held March , 2000 at Holy Name Catholic Church of West Union, under the direction of Rev. Dale Rausch.

Jason was born Oct. 10, 1977. He grew up on his parents acreage north of Hawkeye. He attended Hawkeye Elementary School, and North Fayette Middle and High school in West Union. Upon his graduation, Jason attended Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, graduating with a police science degree in 1998.

Jason was preceded in death by his grandfather, Charles W. Kaeppel. Survivors include his parents, Daren and Mary Mathis Kaeppel of Hawkeye; two brothers, Brian (Jill Wurzer), Hawkeye and Chad (Jami Devine) of Cedar Falls; a special niece, Makayla Kaeppel (daughter of Brian); his grandparents, Delbert and Ann Mathis of Waukon and Ethelyn Kaeppel, Hawkeye; two aunts, Charlyn (Brad) Boyle, West Union, and Elouise (Glenn) Reed, Lansing; five uncles, Cletus (Karen) Mathis, and Daniel (Kathy) Mathis, both of Waukon, Earl (Gayle) Mathis, Cedar Rapids, Cyril (Shirley) Mathis, Buffalo City, WI, and his godfather, John Mathis, of Cedar Rapids; and fourteen loving cousins that will miss Jason greatly.

Casketbearers were Vaughn Mathis, Jared Kent, Fred Nuss, Nate Humes, Travis Boyle, Andrew Wenthe, Jeff Jensen, Mike Soppe and Dave Wagner.

Jason made friends easily and cherished each and every one of them. He was full of life, big-hearted and always had a bear hug for everyone. Jason's love will last in our hearts for ever.
