Former Resident Passes Away
New York -- Charles L. "Red" Kluss, vice president and executive assistant of U. S. Plywood-Champion Papers, Inc., died of a heart attack Sunday night at his home: Apartment 11M 25 Sutton Place South, New York. He was the son of Mrs. Nina Harrington of Postville.
A long-time resident of Hamilton, Ohio, Mr. Kluss was stricken in his Sutton Place Apartment in New York. He was 55.
Mr. Kluss achieved national prominence as an investment counsel and management consultant. He was a founding partner of Hewitt Associates, a Chicago based investment and management consultant firm. He joined Champion Papers, Inc. in 1956 as a special assistant to the executive vice president for personnel and public relations. Mr. Kluss was named director of Corporate relations services for Champion in 1960. Two years later, he was appointed vice president of personnel counsel. In July, 1964 he was named vice president and director of executive resources, a position he held until the merger of Champion Papers with U. S. Plywood on February 28, 1967. He was then elected vice president of the new $Billion Forest Products Company.
During his career, Mr. Kluss counseled many of the nation's largest firms on the planning and installation of employee benefits programs, employee relations, and communications. He also authored numerous articles on these subjects.
A native of Postville, Mr. Kluss was a graduate of the University of Iowa where he majored in commerce. He did post graduate studies in psychology and chemical engineering at the University of Chicago and Northwestern University.
Mr. Kluss married the former Madeline Riddell in 1933. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Carol, now Mrs. Scott Walker of Chicago, and two grandchildren.
Mr. Kluss was a World War II navy veteran being honorably discharged in the grade of lieutenant commander.
Funeral services are being held today (Wednesday) at 100:00 a.m. at The Frank Campbell Funeral Home, 81st Street at Madison Ave. in Manhattan.
