Mrs. J.E. Johnson

Mrs. J.E. Johnson was born in Sundsvall, Sweden, September 22nd. 1846, and departed this life March 19, 1922, at the age of 75 years, 5 months, and 27 days. Her maiden name being Bertha Christine Hammerberg. With other members of her family she immigrated to the U.S. and arrived at Lansing, Iowa, July 6th, 1869, thus having lived continuously in Center township for fifty-three years. She was united in marriage to John E. Johnson in the fall of 1869. This union was blessed with two children, Hannah C. and Robert C. the latter who was the mainstay of his mother in maintaining a home since the death of the husband and father 36 years ago, was called by death January 29th, 1914. The untimely passing of the son broke up the old home which was one of the pioneer homes of this locality having been established by Eric Sandman in the late forties, and was the point of destination of many of the early immigrants and noted for its hospitality. Since 1914 she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. J.A. Anderson, where she enjoyed every comfort. The funeral held on Wednesday at the Center Baptist Church, of which she had been a devoted member and faithful constituent, for over fifty years, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Reed, who spoke fittingly of the Christian virtues and fortitute of the departed. John A. Anderson, son-in-law of deceased briefly memorized a few of the stirring incidents of trial and conquest in the eventful life of Grandma Johnson and paid a glowing tribute to the noble character of the departed. Her death marks the passing of one of the last remnants of early pioneers who founded this community and the high ideals for which it has stood.
