Muriel Adeline Steiber Cooper was born June 8, 1910 in Lafayette Township, rural Lansing, the daughter of Frederick and Selma (Dee) Steiber. She was the third child in a family of ten. She attended Lafayette Center grammar school and graduated from Lansing High School May 11, 1927 as valedictorian of her class. She then attended the Teachers College in Cedar Falls. After graduation, Muriel taught all eight grades at the Mays Prairie School (and was the janitor) for $60 a month.

June 11, 1930 she married Edwin R. Cooper at the Evangelical United Brethren Church, Lansing. They farmed a few years then moved to Lansing. Edwin was a valued employee of Eischeid Construction Co. and Peter Kiewit Construction Co., which took him all over the country on construction projects. The family always moved with him and made a home wherever they were located. They returned to Lansing in 1947.

In 1962 they purchased a farm in Taylor Township and “retired” to the country in 1964. Edwin and Muriel enjoyed two trips to Hawaii. In October 1985, Muriel moved to Waukon, where she quickly organized Saturday morning coffee gatherings of family and friends which have continued to this day. In November 2005, Muriel moved to the Good Samaritan Center, where she enjoyed the good food and socializing with her friends there. She was always grateful for the good care she received.

Muriel was a sports enthusiast, played basketball on a championship team, and loved to bowl, going to several national tournaments. She loved to watch Tiger Woods golf. Muriel and her sister, Viette, traveled to the Rose Bowl in 1982 in support of the Hawkeyes. She enjoyed gardening and canning her produce for family, and she loved following her family’s school activities.

Muriel was an accomplished seamstress making most of her daughters’ clothing and even their wedding dresses. She was a very outgoing person and was the one to plan card parties with the neighborhood ladies. Her banana cream pies were famous, as well as her vegetable beef soup. Muriel taught herself to crochet and made countless afghans and doilies for family and friends. She made baby caps for Veterans Memorial Hospital for years. She was employed at the YMCA Conference Center of the Rockies, Estes Park, CO as a lodge hostess for 16 years. She enjoyed the Rocky Mountains and the people who vacationed there. Muriel spent her life in service to others. She cherished her family and loved spending time with all of them. Muriel was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lansing and was very active in church activities. She was a long time member of the Browning Club and Veterans Memorial Hospital auxiliary.
