Rites Held For Henry Koevenig

Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 10;00 a.m. at St. Bridget's Catholic Church for Henry Koevenig, 78, who passed away at Postville Hospital Thursday morning, December 16, at 9:00 a.m. Rev. J. Vallaster officiated at the Requiem mass. Burial was made in Postville Cemetery.

Henry Koevenig was born July 1, 1876, the son of Joseph Koevenig and Margaret Welch Koevenig in Clayton county at the farm now owned by Merle Lange at the south edge of Postville. He passed away at Postville Hospital on Thursday morning, December 16, having been taken there the previous day.

Mr. Koevenig married Mollie Stockman and the couple made their home in Postville where they resided throughout their entire lives. Mrs. Koevenig passed away in 1940.

The pitching ability of Henry Koevenig was well known throughout eastern Iowa. He was a member of Postville's "Famous First" and pitched ball for teams throughout the area. He became a professional ball player as a pitcher in the South Dakota League in his early days.

His trade was painter and interior decorator. He and Mrs. Koevenig operated a restaurant for several years and later he operated a bowling alley and billard room. For the past 12 years Henry has been janitor at the Citizens State Bank.

He is survived by two sons, Joe Koevenig of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Paul Koevenig of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; two grandsons; a sister Mrs. Josephine Becker of Calmar; and a half-sister, Pauline Buehl of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
