Cecelia Teeling Howes was born April 11, 1907 in Waukon to Edward and Christina (Haas) Teeling. She grew up in the Lycurgus area of rural Waukon and attended the rural Lycurgus “Old Stone” School. She graduated from St. Vincent’s Academy in Dubuque in 1923.
May 6, 1930 she married Raymond J. Howes at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Lycurgus. They were married 64 years. They farmed in French Creek and Jefferson Townships, rural Waukon, until 1955 and then operated Howes Livestock Leasing Company. Celia also worked as a sales clerk for Hale’s and Graham’s Ladies Stores in Waukon. She resided at Franciscan Village on Cass in La Crosse from 1994 until October of 2003 when she moved to Bethany Riverside, where she lived until the time of her death.
Celia was a long-time member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, where she was a member of the Little Flower Study Club and the Rosary Society for many years. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary for over 50 years. Cecelia loved to play cards, read, crochet and embroider. She enjoyed dancing in her younger days and played golf well into her eighties. She was a friend to all and was still making new friends. Cecelia never had a harsh word for anyone. She leaves us a legacy of love of family, her belief in the power of prayer, especially the Rosary, which she led until she was 100 years old, and an enduring faith in God. We were blessed to have her with us so long.
