Clarence Kirkeberg was born on a farm east of Elgin in Clayton county, the son of Knudt and Ellen Kirkeberg on January 15, 1894. He passed away at his home in Postville March 27, 1965 at the age of 71 years, two months and 12 days. His sudden death was caused by a heart attack.

He was received in to the Christian Church through Holy baptism and became a confirmed member of the Marion Lutheran Church in 1908. Here he was a lifelong member holding numerous offices including Deacon, Trustee, Treasurer, and President of the congregation.

He received his education in Clayton county schools and on September 18, 1920 was united in marriage to Ruth Mable Reierson of rural Elgin. To this union were born two children, Carlyle of Monona, and Eleanor Mae, who died in infancy.

The greater part of his life was spent in farming in the Gunder area until moving to Postville in 1953. Through these years he served the community in such offices as the secretary of Marion Telephone Co., president and secretary of Marion township schools, director and president of Elgin Farmers Dairy Co. and township assessor. He was also a member of the American Legion posts of Clermont, Elgin and currently of Postville. Here he received an award in 1964 for 45 continuous years as a Legion member. Since 1953 he has carpentered and presently was employed as manager of the Tri-City Country Club. He was also active in bowling circles.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth; a daughter Eleanor Mae; his parents; and one sister, Agnes.

He leaves to mourn one son, Carlyle; three grandchildren, Rickey, Renea and Scott; two brothers, Alfred and Henry of Postville; six sisters: Mary Kirkeberg of Postville, Mrs. Ingrid Peterson of Decorah, Mrs. Max Hunsberger (Dinah) and Mrs. Selmer Groth (Ruth) of Elgin, Mrs. Wm. Provosnick (Mable) of Manchester, Mrs. Andrew Anderson (Anna) of Sawyer Michigan; also a large number of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder March 31, at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Landis Gross was the officiating clergyman. Military escort was furnished by Arthur F. Brandt Post No. 518 of Postville.
