Obituary for George Whalen published in the Allamakee Journal of September 10, 1975, reads:
George Whalen Dies at Age of 87
The death of George Whalen occurred Monday afternoon at the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. He had been a patient there for the past couple of weeks.
He was born in Lansing township on April 28, 1888, a son of Caroline Hurm and Kerns Whalen. Following his education in the rural schools, he was married to Martha Glynn of Lansing on August 24, 1916 at I. C. church in Lansing. They farmed for a number of years before moving to town. He served as Lansing’s day and night policeman for many years.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Clifford (Bernadine) Mulholland of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Everett (Barbara) Mulholland of Lansing; and Mrs. William (Charlene) Schulze of Sabula; and three sons, George Jr. of Lansing; John, of Denver, Colorado; and Gregory, whose address was unavailable. Also surviving are 35 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Besides his parents, a brother and a sister preceded him in death.
Services are tentatively set for Thursday morning at tem o’clock at I. C. church in Lansing. A wake liturgy is scheduled for this evening at the Burke-Thornburg Funeral Home.
