Frances Caroline Whalen Byrne died March 26, 1957, and is buried at Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing, IA. Obituary in the April 3, 1957 edition of the Allamakee Journal newspaper reads:
Mrs. John Byrne Rites Friday Morning at I.C.
Funeral services were held Friday morning at Immaculate Conception Church in Lansing for Mrs. Frances Byrne, who passed away last Tuesday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lee Wyant in St. Joe Mo. where she made her home for the past several years. She was born Caroline Frances Whalen near Lansing October 12, 1875, the seventh eldest child of the late Mr. and Mrs. Kern Whalen. She was educated in the rural schools and on May 5, 1896 was married to John Byrne who preceded her in death in 1934. Left to mourn the passing of a kind and loving mother are two sons, Terrance, of Waukesha, Wis.; Bernard, Martha, and Mrs. John (Agnes) Ormsby, all of La Crosse, besides Mrs. Wyant, (Margaret) where she lived. Other immediate survivors are 2 brothers, George Whalen of Lansing and Kern, of Oakley, Minn. besides nieces, nephews and several grandchildren. Also preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were 4 brothers and 5 sisters. Mrs. Byrne was a good Christian mother whose church and family were her chief concern. She was a member of the Catholic Womens League and Charter member of the Rosary Society.
Msgr. Henry Scharphoff offered the Mass of Requiem and Father Beelner said the final prayers at the graveside in Gethsemane where interment was made. Honorary pall bearers for the Womens Catholic Order of Foresters were Mesdames Margaret Guider, Joe Manning, Gene Brennan, Herman Troendle, George Stirn and Mayme Carroll. Active casket bearers were Ben Kelleher, Joseph Whalen, Joe Manning, Walter Aschom, Joseph Wagner and Vincent Spinner. Besides her children and grandchildren others present at the funeral Friday were the mesdames Al Duntenman and Mabel Siewers of Chicago and vicinity.
