Anna Manning, wife of James Manning, died in 1941. Obituary in the April 2, 1941, edition of the Allamakee Journal reads:

Mrs. James Manning Dies

Mrs. James Manning, popular and well known lady of Waukon, passed away suddenly in her home Thursday afternoon after an illness of less than a day due to a heart ailment, bringing the deepest grief to the members of her family and large circle of friends.

As Anna Calvey, the deceased was born on December 16, 1875 in Iowa township and was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Calvey, early settlers in this county. After completing her education, she taught for a number of years in the schools around Lansing and New Albin.

On November 27, 1906, she was married at Harpers Ferry to James J. Manning and after a period of residence on several farms in that vicinity, the couple moved to Lansing, where he was engaged in livestock buying and the livery business.

The family moved from Lansing in 1922 to a dairy farm one mile north of Waukon at the foot of the fairgrounds hill where they resided until several years ago when they retired and moved to Waukon.

Mrs. Manning’s pleasing manners, kind and helpful deeds were evidence of her excellent character. As a wife and mother, she was greatly devoted to her family, but always extended her graciousness to her neighbors and friends. Being an exceptionally intelligent woman, she was an extensive reader and remained acquainted with the affairs of the world.

Surviving to mourn her passing are her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Charles L. Steffen of Milwaukee; two sons Frank and Vincent Manning, also of Milwaukee; two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Cavanaugh of St. Paul, Minn., and Mrs. Maud O’Shaugnessy of Spokane, Washington.

Funeral services, largely attended, were held Monday morning in St. Patrick’s church at Waukon with the Rev E. J. McDonald officiating. Burial was in the cemetery at Wexford and pall bearers were Mike Gavin, Mike Mullarkey, Henry O’Niell, Joseph Manning, Patrick O’Malley and John Haas.
