Obituary for Thomas Murphy (1882 – 1964), son of Catherine Manning and Patrick Murphy, in the Allamakee Journal newspaper reads:

Thomas Murphy Rites at Wexford Monday

Funeral services were held Monday morning at ten o’clock at I. C. Church in Wexford for Thomas Francis Murphy, 81, pioneer resident to that vicinity who passed away Friday at St. Francis Hospital at La Crosse. Death resulted from a cardiac failure.

He was born July 20, 1882 in Lafayette township, a son of Patrick and Catherine Murphy, early day settlers of that area. He attended the rural schools of the community and on April 12, 1910 was married to Frances Thornton and they farmed nearby until about three years ago when they moved to La Crosse to make their home. Besides his widow he is survived by several children: Roy, Janesville, Wis.; Mrs. Art (Katherine) Werth, Mrs. Wilbert (Bernadine) Brunke, La Crosse; Mrs. Bernard (Edna) McGuire and Mark Murphy, Wheatland, Wyo.; Delbert Murphy, Cheyenne, Wyo.; Leo Murphy, Waukon. Other immediate survivors include one sister, Mrs. Mike (Agnes) Mullarkey of Lansing and one brother, Frank Murphy, of Lafayette township along with 25 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. A daughter, Mary Katherine, preceded him in death. He was a lifelong Catholic, a member of the Rosary and Holy Name Societies.

Father Robert Rahe offered the Mass of Requiem and said the final prayers at the graveside in the adjoining cemetery where interment was made. Casket bearers were Ray Crowe, Joseph Guider, Vincent Mullarkey, Mickey Madden, Cyril Garin and Paul Gavin.

Among the out of town relatives and friends attending the funeral services were his children, Edna, Delbert, Mark and Ray Murphy of Wyoming; Roy and Mr. and Mrs. James Martelle and Steve Larson, Janesville, Wis.; and Father Daniel O’Sullivan, Cascade.
