Merlin J. Nelson

Merlin J. Nelson, 72, of Dorchester died peacefully at his home in Dorchester Tuesday, September 22, 2009. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, September 25 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Dorchester. Father Joseph Schneider officiated and burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dorchester.

Merlin was born August 19, 1937 in Caledonia, MN to Nels and Clara (Gran) Nelson. He graduated from Loretto High School in Caledonia and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He married Sheilah Kumpf November 16, 1963.

Merlin owned several businesses in the area and he was a rural route carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He was an avid collector and was proud of his log cabin.

Merlin is survived by his wife Sheilah of Dorchester; his children, Jim, Judy, Joyce, Jane, and Jennifer; 13 grandchildren; a great-grandson; a sister, Beverly Welscher; and two brothers, Jerry and Bob Nelson. He was preceded in death by a son, John; his parents; and two brothers, Lyle and Don.
