Helen Etteldorf
Helen G. Etteldorf, 93, of Waukon died Monday, July 13, 2009 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 16 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider and Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
Helen Gertrude Etteldorf was born March 20, 1916 in Lansing, the daughter of Edward J. and Mae Freda (Gerkey) McDonald. She attended St. Patrick elementary school and graduated from Waukon High School. Helen began her working career as a clerk at the Allamakee County Auditor's Office.
July 25, 1948 she married Peter John Etteldorf at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. They moved to Ossian, where together they operated Etteldorf Hatcheries for many years. After selling the business, they returned to Waukon and Helen returned to work for Allamakee County in the Treasurer's Office until her retirement.
Helen stayed busy and active her entire life. She was a loving and caring mother to her daughter, Mary Ann, and a faithful long-time member of St. Patrick Parish. She was also a dedicated rose gardener and enjoyed spending time and visiting with her many friends.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Ann of Waukon; a brother, Don (Terry Brooks) McDonald of Moses Lake, WA; three nieces, Patty (Frank) Goltz of Waukon, Jan (John Campbell) McDonald of Bettendorf, and Barb (Brian) Folden of Spokane, WA; six nephews, Jim McDonald of Seattle, WA, Tim McDonald of Lacey, WA, David (Julie Hillocky) Barloon and Dr. Thomas Barloon, both of Iowa City, Al (Doris) Etteldorf of Decorah, and Bob Etteldorf of Riverside, CA; along with numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Pete, who died in 1995; and a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Jeanne McDonald.
Casketbearers were David and Dr. Thomas Barloon, John Campbell, Frank Goltz, and Al and Rob Etteldorf.
