Mervin L. Rolfs, 57, of Dubuque died Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at Manor Care in Dubuque. Funeral services were held Monday, July 13 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home, of Waukon, helped with arrangements.
Mervin Louis Rolfs was born November 13, 1951 in Waterloo, the son of Donald L. and Phyllis A. (Spiegler) Rolfs. He was baptized at St. John's Catholic Church, and confirmed at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Mervin attended Blessed Sacrament Elementary School, graduated from Waterloo Columbus High School in 1969, and went on to attend the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, where he earned a degree in business and economics in 1973.
In 1975 he married Coleen Francik. They were later divorced. Mervin's working career centered around sales. He began selling for Armour/Dial Corp., then for M&M/Mars Candy Co., and later spent many years selling underground fuel tanks for Modern Welding Co., until health issues forced his retirement. At different times he lived in Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Bettendorf, and Burlington before spending the last several years in Dubuque.
Mervin was a member of Ducks Unlimited, the Dubuque County Democratic Party, Knights of Columbus, and the Audubon Society. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and liked to hunt and fish. He was also an avid reader and had a passion for debating politics, economics, and current events.
Survivors include a daughter, Marcy (Jim) Brockett of Kirksville, MO; his parents, Donald and Phyllis Rolfs of Red Wing, MN; and a sister, Rhonda Rolfs of Rochester, MN and her children, John and Wendy Reincke.
