SIMON NOLTE, 93, PIONEER LUDLOW MAN, PASSES IN POSTVILLE

Nonagenarian is Survived By Seventy Descendants; Funeral Held Saturday

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon for Simon Nolte, 93, first at the Schutte Funeral Home in this city where the Rev. G. E. Reibert, pastor of the Bethlehem church of Ludlow was assisted by the Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig of St. Paul's Lutheran church of this city, and later at the Bethlehem church in Ludlow. Burial was made in the Bethlehem cemetery.

The Misses Vivian and Erma Moen sang at the first service and the Bethlehem choir sang at the church service. Pallbearers were the six grandsons of the deceased, Donald and Ervin Goeke, Robert and Harlan Sebastian, Albert Meyer and Edward Brandt. Six granddaughters served as flower girls, namely, Mrs. Donald Goeke, Mrs. Florence Schutte, Mrs. Harlan Sebastian, Mrs. Lawrence Meyer, Lorna Mae Nolte and Mrs. Edward Brandt.

Mr. Nolte, who passed away last Wednesday morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank D. Sebastian in this city where he had lived since October, following a week's illness, was born in Lippe-Detmold, Germany, on September 4, 1850. He attended school in his native land and also in this country after coming here.

He was married in Germany to Johanna Fogt in 1870 and to this union five sons and six daughters were born. Two sons, Simon and Fred, passed away as infants in Germany. With the family of one son and four daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Nolte came to the United States in the spring of 1884 and settled immediately in Ludlow township. They first rented a farm for a few years, then bought a farm a short distance south of the Bethlehem church, where they lived until retiring 28 years ago. They moved to Burr Oak where they lived for ten years when the health of Mrs. Nolte began to fail and the couple then made their home with the children, moving from one to the other. Mrs. Nolte passed away on January 22, 1926, aged 78 years. A daughter, Minnie, passed away at Waukon, November 8, 1899, and a son, John, died at Burr Oak January 9, 1929.

Surviving are five daughters and two sons, namely, Mrs. John O. Meyer (Lena) of Ossian; Mrs. Simon Brandt (Augusta) of Waukon; Mrs. Inert Evans (Louise) of Murphy, Oregon; Mrs. Frank Sebastian (Lydia) of Postville; Mrs. Edward Goeke (Laura) of Postville; William Nolte of Waukon, and Ben Nolte of West Burlington. Also surviving are 27 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Mr. Nolte was a member of the Bethlehem church.
