Robert J. Sweeney, 89, of Lansing died Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at Thornton Manor Care Center in Lansing following a long illness. Funeral services were held Monday, May 18 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery, both in Lansing. Military honors were accorded by the American Legion Beck-Glenn-Strong Post #50 and the VFW Gustav F. Kerndt Post #5981, both of Lansing.
Robert was born February 10, 1920 in Lansing to Benjamen and Alice (Williams) Sweeney. He served in the Army from 1941 to 1945 in the South Pacific. He married Dorothy Pearson September 9, 1942 in Reno, NV. Following his discharge he returned to Lansing and was the manager of the state liquor store in Lansing for 34 years. Robert was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the VFW and American Legion in Lansing.
Robert is survived by a daughter, Rosanne Sweeney of Lansing; and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy, May 8, 1988; three brothers, Ray, Pat and Jack; a sister, Gladys Sandry; and special friend, Phyllis Hammel.

Robert Sweeney received a plaque recently in recognition of Sweeney's 26 years of service as a manager of Lansing liquor store. Jeannine Drahota, Store operations Manager of Iowa Liquor Department, made the presentation on October 3.
