James LeRoy Leas

James L. Leas, 59, of Waukon died Sunday, May 10, 2009 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 14 at 11 a.m. at Rossville Presbyterian Church in Rossville, with Pastor Tom Buresh officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be in Evergreen Cemetery, rural Waukon. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 13 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

James LeRoy Leas was born September 4, 1949 in Waukon, the son of Harlan Neil and Darlene (Rush) Leas. He was baptized and confirmed at Rossville Presbyterian Church in Rossville. James attended Jefferson #7 country school in rural Waukon, graduated from Waukon High School in 1968 and attended NICC in Calmer for one year, where he received a certificate as an auto mechanic. He served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971, where he was stationed in Germany. After the service he farmed with his father in Jefferson Township and worked at Leas Service Garage in Rossville. James also owned Leas Excavating, where he hauled rock and ran a backhoe.

He was a member of Rossville Presbyterian Church and was a member of the American Legion in Waukon. James enjoyed working on farm machinery, plowing snow for neighbors and residents in Rossville, tilling gardens, reading and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his mother, Darlene, and a brother, David, both of Waukon. He was preceded in death by his father, Neil.

Honorary casketbearers are Garry and Jan Barrett, Dennis and Sandy Deal, Hartley and Vickie Enyart and Scott Enyart. Casketbearers are Jake Sweeney, Brad Freilinger, Brad Decker, Kermit Klees, Larry Ashbacher and Virgil Thorstenson.

ATV Rollover Claims Life of Rural Waukon Man

A Sunday, May 10 all-terrain vehicle accident in rural Allamakee County claimed the life of 59-year old James Leroy Leas of rural Waukon. The Allamakee County Sheriff's Dispatch received a report of the accident at 6:02 p.m. Sunday, with the incident taking place in a wooded area west of the intersection of Primrose Drive and Maple Road near the border of Franklin and Jefferson Townships in southern Allamakee County.

A report from the Allamakee County Sheriff's Office indicates Leas was operating a Polaris 6x6 all-terrain vehicle on a hillside when the vehicle rolled over. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A full obituary for James Leas appears on Page 3A of this week's edition of The Standard.

Assisting at the scene were Waterville Rescue, Waukon Ambulance and the Allamakee County Sheriff's Office. The accident remains under investigation.
