Ruth E. Schneider, 88, of Waukon died Thursday, April 2, 2009 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 7 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Rev. Marie Paterik officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Ruth Emma Schneider was born January 17, 1921 on the Jefferson Township, rural Waukon farm of her parents, Carl and Lydia (Kosbau) Groezinger. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ, where she remained a life-long member. Ruth attended rural Jefferson Township elementary schools and graduated from Waukon High School in 1938. She attended Waukon Junior College and went on to graduate cum laude from Upper Iowa University in Fayette with a degree in education. She also received a teaching certificate from Luther College in Decorah.
May 18, 1944 she married J. Milton Schneider at Zion. Ruth's career in education spanned 44 years. She taught first in rural Allamakee County schools and then at the Lansing Elementary School. She spent a brief time as a bookkeeper at Waukon State Bank and then returned to education as administrative assistant to the Allamakee County Superintendent of Schools. Her last 20 years were spent as an elementary instructor in the Allamakee Community School District in Waukon before retiring in 1982.
Ruth was a very active member at Zion UCC. She had 36 years of involvement with the Christian Education program at Zion, teaching Sunday School for many years and holding various positions, including treasurer, secretary and superintendent. She also taught the first-year confirmation classes for 12 years, was a member of the women's fellowship and missionary society, and chaired the Zion Centennial Celebration in 1985. Her other civic involvements included being a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the New Century and VOV Study Clubs.
Ruth enjoyed traveling with Milton, especially several bus trips to different parts of the country and a special trip to England. She also liked to attend various community events. Ruth was known for the immaculate care she gave her house and yard and was fond of a number of collectible items she had. Her trademark attire was to wear a matching hat with her outfit for the day. Ruth was very faithful in her correspondence on special occasions with family and friends and loved to stay in touch with many of her former students.
Survivors include a brother-in-law, Perry Beedle of St. Louis, MO; a niece, Dr. Kathleen (Dr. Julian) Bueno of Edwardsville, IL, and their daughter, Cristina; and a nephew, Pastor Paul Beedle of Houston, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Milton, who died in 1997; a sister, Marie Beedle; and three infant brothers.
Honorary casketbearers were Henry and Carol Miene, Curt and Jan Brandsmeier, Boyd and Audrey Groezinger, Bob and Irene Stock, Oliver Emerson and Jim Bristol. Casketbearers were Carlton Christianson, George Bieber, Mark Stock, Lee Hermeier, Cletus Rooney and Rick Larson.
