Luella Marie Schoenthal

L. Marie Schoenthal, 78, of Waukon died Thursday, April 9, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, April 13 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Rev. Marie Paterik officiating. Burial was held in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Luella Marie Schoenthal was born April 30, 1930 in rural Luana, the daughter of Harold and Grace (Hammon) Schlitter. She was confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon and graduated from Waukon High School in 1948. May 28, 1948 she married Curtis Schoenthal at Zion United Church of Christ parsonage.

Marie was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, where she was active in the ladies' groups and taught Sunday school. She was also a member of the Hospital Auxiliary and was a 4-H leader. Marie enjoyed cooking, baking, reading, crocheting, working on jigsaw and crossword puzzles, and watching birds, especially cardinals. She also enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband, Curtis of Waukon; her children, Cheryl (Glen) Grady of Neillsville, WI, Jerry (Carol) Schoenthal of Waukon, Kaye (Jeff) Engelhardt of Charles City, and Todd (Teresa) Schoenthal of Stoughton, WI; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Della Leppert of Lansing and Sharyn (Kenny) Schleisman of Lake City; two brothers, Dean Schlitter of Waukon and Harlan (Patsy) Schlitter of Lansing; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Carol Schlitter; a brother, Keith Schlitter; and a brother-in-law, Howard Leppert.

Honorary casketbearers were her granddaughters, Jennifer Schmitt, Julia Schoenthal and Edie Kay Schwarz. Casketbearers were her grandsons, Brandon, Blaine, Bryce and Brett Grady, Ed and John Schoenthal, and Mitch and Kirk Engelhardt.
