Last Rites Tomorrow For Moritz Kerndt

Moritz Kerndt, president of Kerndt Brothers Savings Bank at Lansing, Iowa, died at his home Sunday evening, October 25th, (1964), following a short illness. He was born in Lansing on October 17, 1875, the 7th child in a family of eleven. He was a partner in G. Kerndt & Bros., Inc., and the Kerndt Brothers Savings Bank and vice president of the bank when it incorporated as a state bank in 1908. He graduated from the local public high school and took advanced courses in business at the University of Notre Dame. He was respected and active member of his community serving on the city council for 8 years and a charter member of the Lansing Kiwanis Club. He served and acted on many different civic committees and organizations and always supported projects for the betterment of the community in which he lived. In later years, his particular interest was the development and improvement of Mt. Hosmer Park to which he contributed generously his time and financial assistance. He was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Council in this area.
In 1911, he married Mary Martin, daughter of Herman Martin of Oskaloosa, Iowa. They became the parents of four children; James, who is now Abbot at Our Lady of New Melleray Monastery in Dubugue, Iowa; Thomas, who is now vice president of Kerndt Brothers Savings Bank, Lansing; Gustave, who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and lost his life as a member of the U.S. Destroyer Sims during the Battle of the Coral Sea; Mary Katherine, married to Dr. Robert Nachtwey and now living in Springfield, Illinois. He was preceded in deathby his wife in 1953. Other surviving relatives include two sisters, Mrs Clara Grau, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Mis Katherine Kerndt of Lansing and 20 grandchildren.
Well known in the field of banking, Mr. Kerndt was one of the oldest active bankers in the state, being the last of four brothers and their father, who originally organized the bank.
Funeral arrangements are scheduled for 9:30 a.m., Thursday, October 29th, at Immaculate Conception Church, Lansing with burial in Gethsemane Cemetery.
