Esther Stella Schultz

Esther Stella Schultz, 97, of Postville died Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union, following a brief illness. Funeral Services were held Monday, March 16 at the Community Presbyterian Church, Postville, with Rev. Gary Catterson officiating. Burial followed in the Postville Cemetery, Postville.

Esther was born April 12, 1911 on the family farm along Yellow River in Allamakee County to Mortimer Charles "Mort" and Bertha Irene (Uhl) Deering. Esther attended Evergreen country school through seventh grade, and graduated from Postville High School in 1928. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, graduating in 1931. After receiving her diploma she taught in a country school.

Esther was united in marriage to her high school classmate, Kenneth J. Schultz, June 14, 1933 at the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville. Following their marriage, Esther and Kenneth farmed in partnership with his parents. The farm was known as the Sunny View Dairy. The milk from the herd of dairy cows was cooled and placed in glass quart bottles for delivery by Kenneth to residences in Postville. Esther also found time for gardening and sewing.

Kenneth and Esther were proud parents of three children. She was a loving mother and took great pride in being a farm wife and mother to her children.

Esther was a longtime member of Community Presbyterian Church and served as an elder and a deacon. For many years, she attended the adult Sunday school class. She was also an active member of the United Presbyterian Women's Organization and a member and past president of PEO Chapter FT.

After Kenneth's death she continued to enjoy traveling, gardening, quilting and play cards with her friends. She also enjoyed spending time visiting her children and grandchildren and attending her grandchildren's activities. In later years, she could be found weeding the flowerbeds at church and Lull's Park.

Survivors include three children, Donna (Larry) Reed of Eldora, John (Beverly) Schultz of Postville, and Barbara (Glenn) Isserstedt of Milford, MI; grandchildren, Lynnae (David) Lathrop, Amber (Kenneth) Crosser, Kent (Karen) Schultz, Deanna Schultz, Margaret (Todd) Barker, Kirk (Nancy) Schultz, Matthew (Holly) Isserstedt, and Mark (Marcia) Isserstedt; 18 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Marjorie Wallis of Renton, WA; and one sister-in-law, Doris Albertson of Boise, ID.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth, July 2, 1976; one sister, Dorothy (Arthur) Fisher; one brother, Irving (Leeone) Deering; and one brother-in-law, W.B. Wallis.

Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Postville is in charge of arrangements.
