Julia Amelia Roe-Bernhardt

Julia A. Roe-Bernhardt, 87, of Waukon died Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, March 2 at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waukon, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial was in the Old West Paint Creek Cemetery, rural Waukon.

Julia Amelia Roe-Bernhardt was born February 27, 1921 in Clermont, the daughter of Alfred and Amelia (Pederson) Olson. She was baptized April 24, 1921 and confirmed May 12, 1935, both at the West Clermont Lutheran Church. Julia graduated from Clermont High School May 16, 1938. After high school she first worked for Dr. Jerde in Clermont, then for quite a few years at a Waukon grocery store. For over 30 years Julia was a bookkeeper at the Waukon Equity Co-op.

April 13, 1942 she married Orrin J. Roe at Kahoka, MO; he died October 20, 1977. December 16, 1983 she married Edward Bernhardt at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon; he died July 24, 1992. Julia was a long-time member of Toastmistresses and Old West Paint Creek Church and its WELCA Ladies Aide. She enjoyed time spent with her grand and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her three sons, Ron (Roberta) Roe of Carroll, and Marv Roe and Curt (Cheryl) Roe, both of Waukon; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; two sons, Allen and Russell Roe; four sisters, Agnes Ellis, Bessie Hirsch, Irene Thompson and Gladys Kobriger; and three brothers, Olaf, Joseph and Leonard Olson.

Casketbearers were George Kobriger, Wayne Olson, Billy Roe, Russ Roe, Shayne Roe, Josh Roe, Brian Roe and Shawn Roe.
