Evangeline Francis McKenna

Evangeline F. McKenna, 89, of Clutier died Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at her home following a battle with cancer. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, February 7 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Albin, with burial at a later date at St. Joseph's Cemetery in New Albin. The family will greet friends and relatives at the church one hour prior to the service, at 10 a.m., and there will be a luncheon served at 12 p.m. in the church basement. Overton Funeral Home of Traer is assisting the family.

Evangeline Francis (Smerud) McKenna was born July 10, 1919 in Jefferson Township of Houston County, MN to Oscar and Clara Wild Smerud. She was raised on the home farm in Minnesota near New Albin. She received her education in New Albin, where she graduated from high school.

November 30, 1939 she was united in marriage to Harold E. McKenna at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Albin. They made their home in New Albin, and lived in Caledonia, MN and Waterville before they moved to Clutier in 1970. She then operated Vangie's Tap in Clutier for a time before she began working in assembly at John Deere in Waterloo. Following her retirement in 1984 she continued to make Clutier her home.

Survivors include her children, Kay (Larry) Greer of Woodsville, TX, Michelle (Arthur) Caccavale and Colleen (Richard) Spinner-McKenna, both of Idaho Springs, CO, Bridget (Elmer) Robinson of Hazel Crest, IL, Kenneth (Nancy) McKenna of Raymond, Evangeline (Laurie) McKenna of Clutier, Thomas (Matt) Sipes-McKenna of Seattle, WA, Gerald (Anne) McKenna of Allen's Park, CO, Constance (Glenn) Strait of Clutier, Maureen (David) Phifer of Greenwood, CO, and Brian (Christina Edwards) McKenna of Des Moines; in-laws Ray Mecthel, Sr. of Caledonia, MN, Dennis Stover of Idaho Springs, CO and Rhonda Walker of Arvada, CO; 31 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; her brothers and sisters, Margaretta Keenan and Donald Smerud, both of Waukon, John Smerud of New Albin, and Al (Lorna) Smerud of LaCrosse, WI.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold, June 14, 1973; her children, Patricia Mecthel Herzog, Donald McKenna, Teresa McKenna, Clara Marie McKenna and Susan McKenna; and her brothers and sisters, Sara Smerud, Ed Smerud, Rosemary Interkofer, George Smerud and Clara Louise Ball.
