Leota Elizabeth Ellefson 1922-2009

Leota E. Ellefson, 86, of Waukon died Monday, January 5, 2009 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 8 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial will be in Old East Paint Creek Cemetery, rural Waterville. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, January 7 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Leota Elizabeth Ellefson was born July 9, 1922 in Caledonia, MN, the daughter of Leo and Elizabeth (Burmester) Brumm. She was baptized at St. Luke's United Church of Christ and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in La Crosse, WI. Leota graduated from Central High School in La Crosse and took some training in nursing. She worked as a receptionist and secretary for Gateway Transfer in La Crosse.

November 9, 1946 she married Everett Hardin Ellefson in La Crosse. They farmed together on the Ellefson Family Century Farm in Paint Creek Township for many years, and she was also a secretary at the Waterville School. Leota and Everett moved into Waukon in 1975. She worked at Bieber Real Estate and Insurance for several years.

Leota was a member of the Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church, where she was very active with the ladies circles and taught Sunday school. She was also a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and its ladies circles, the Thursday Club, PEO, and was a 4-H leader. Leota enjoyed sewing, baking, quilting, fishing, traveling, playing cards, golfing, following the Cubs and spending time in her garden. Her favorite times were spent with her family and following the grandchildren's activities.

Survivors include her children, Susan (Joe) Papp of Lansing and Roger (Lynn) Ellefson of Waterville; three grandsons, Tom (Kim) Papp of Indianapolis, IN, Ross Ellefson of Waterville, and John Papp of Waukon; three granddaughters, Nikki (Jason) Sullivan of Waukon, Julie Papp of Waukon, and Kristin Ellefson of Waterville; five great-grandsons; three great-granddaughters; a brother-in-law, Bill Newhouse of Boulder, CO; a sister-in-law, Carma Myers of Waukon; two nephews and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Everett, who died in 2005; an infant grandson, David Papp; and a sister, Eunice Newhouse.

Honorary casketbearers are Ann Byrnes, Jane Degnan, Beth Dehli, Kim Papp and Vanessa Schulte. Casketbearers are Julie, John, Joe and Tom Papp, Ross Ellefson, Kristin Ellefson, Nikki and Jason Sullivan and Tim Connelly.
