BENT BOWMAN ANSWERS CALL TO BEYOND.

The people of this community were saddened Sunday when the news was received from Rochester that Ben Bowman had died suddenly. Although this was rather expected by those close to the family his passing caused sad hearts among his old comrades and the people who had known him so many years.
Mr. Bowman was a pioneer of our grand old state of Iowa which he loved and where his youth and energy were spent breaking her fertile prairies. One of his chief delights was in telling of the good times and also of the many trials of the early settlers and his watching the progress of civilization was another point he always dwelt on and took keen interest in. Where cities and towns now stand he saw the virgin soil and the transformation always filled his mind with thought and wonderment.

OBITUARY

Thomas Benton Bowman was born in Vermilion Co., Indiana. April 7. 1841 and died in Rochester. Minn., Sept. 28, 1913, at the age of 72 years, 5 months and 21 days.
He came to Iowa in 1849 and located near Postville. In 1861 he enlisted in the 1st. Iowa Cavalry and served his country for four years as a soldier.
On April 6, 1869 he was married to Miss Eliza Morthrop. To this union were born three children as follows. Fred, who died in infancy. Mrs. Ida Merriau and Frank, both of Greene.
He removed from Postville to Powshiek county and later to Floyd county, in 1881. In 1900, he located in Greene, which remained his residence to the end.
The wife of his youth died in Greene. July 13, 1911.
He united with the Methodist Episcopal church in Postville. Dec. 20, 1898 and remained in the faith of his Church to the end.
He was married to Mrs. Belle Judson of Greene October 31, 1912, who together with his daughter, Mrs. Ida Merriau and son Frank, and one brother Charles of Marble Rock, survive him. The funeral services were held in the Methodist Church on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the pastor Rev. L. L. Lockard and attended by the G. A. R. Post, which conducted the interment in Rose Hill by the side of his first wife.

We wish to extend thanks to the neighbors and friends who came to us in our sorrow at the funeral of our beloved husband and father and tendered a helping hand to help us bear our burden. Especially do we thank the old Soldier Comrades and the ladies of the McKinley Circle and those bringing flowers.
