Alphia Martina Kolsrud

Alphia M. Kolsrud, 98, of Waukon, IA, died Saturday, December 20, 2008, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 23rd, at 11:00 AM at Waterville Lutheran Church in Waterville, IA, with Rev. Kris Snyder officiating. Burial will be at Waterville Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM Monday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Alphia Martina Kolsrud was born on June 26, 1910 on the Allamakee County, rural Waukon, IA, farm of her parents, Jens Karlot and Ida Helena (Johnson) Lund. She was baptized and confirmed in Norwegian at the Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church. Alphia attended the rural "Bryson" School and Waterville High School. Following her schooling, she did housekeeping for a number of area families.

On June 22, 1932 she married Gilman Bernard Kolsrud at the Presbyterian Church Parsonage in Waukon. Together Alphia and Gilman farmed for 48 years near Waterville, IA, operating a dairy herd and raising chickens, hogs and crops. In 1980 they retired and moved to Waukon. Since 2003 she has been a resident of Northgate Care Center.

Alphia was a faithful member of Waterville Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid and Mary Ruth Circle, holding various offices in both. She belonged to a Neighborhood Homemakers Club and did volunteer work at Makee Manor and the Good Samaritan Center. Alphia was an avid sewer, doing fancy work, sewing and tying quilts for charity, making baptismal cloths for the Waterville Lutheran Church, and did lots of “patching” work. She also participated in a ceramics class and painted many beautiful items. Alphia was a wonderful cook and baker, with requests at every Kolsrud reunion to bring her famous “butterhorns”! Being of Norwegian descent, she also made lefse and many Norwegian goodies. Alphia was very proud of her garden and flowers; and while on the farm, loved her many cats. Together, Gilman and Alphia enjoyed “old time” music and visiting and playing cards with special relatives and friends at every available opportunity.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Marilyn (Barton) Hamm of Waukon and Janet (Duane) Donovan of Prescott, AZ; 8 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Gilman, who died in 2003; a sister, Inga Olson; and a brother, Matthias Lund.

Honorary casketbearers are Craig and Richard Geving, Ted Johnson, Joyce Kuhse, Shirley Manning, Lillian McConnell, and Dale, Ken and Roger Olson. Casketbearers are Russell Snitker, David Kolsrud, Jim Thies, Gary Kolsrud, Robert Kolsrud, Carlton Larsen, Donald Larsen, and Jeff Hamm.
