James L. Newton

James L. Newton, 61, of Lansing, formerly of Waterloo, died Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo following a brief illness. A Celebration of Life was held Sunday, December 28 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Waterloo. The Cremation Society of Eastern Iowa is assisting the family.

James was born October 24, 1947 in Waterloo, the son of James & Rita (Fischels) Newton. On September 13, 1969 he married Cathy Scovel and they later divorced. He then married Cecilia Edsill and they later divorced. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1965-1967. James was employed by the Waterloo Police Department as a detective from 1969-1991. After retiring from the Police Department he owned Newton Investigation & Security until his death.

Survivors include his son, Shane of Conyers, GA; his daughter, Tracey Greene (Darren) of Wetumpka, AL; his granddaughters, Riley and Reagan Greene; his mother, Rita Newton of Waterloo; his brother, Dennis Newton of Techny, IL; and his sisters, Kathy (Gary) Miller of LaPorte City and Candy (Chris) McKern of Kasson, MN.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Christopher; his father; and an infant brother, Terry.
