Mrs. John Mendenhall, 1906-1938

Myra Ruth Fitschen Mendenhall, daughter of Alfred and Ruby Fitschen, was born at New Albin, Iowa, July 18, 1905, and went home to her maker in the evening of December 20, 1938 at St. Francis hospital, La Crosse, Wis. where she had been taken a few days previous for medical treatment. She attended the public schools of Lansing, Iowa, finishing her education at the Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls. She taught school for four years.

On May 29, 1928, she was united in marriage to John C. Mendenhall making New Albin her home since that time. She was a member of the New Albin Methodist church, serving as president of the Ladies Aid Society as long as she was able; she was also a member of the Eastern Star. In all of these organizations she had given freely of the unusual musical talent that God had so generously bestowed upon her. Mrs. Mendenhall was a fine young woman, beloved by all, and her passing the prime of live, is deeply regretted by not only her sorrowing relatives but also by a host of relatives but also by a host of friends who will ever cherish her memory.

Those left to mourn are her husband, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Fitschen of La Crosse; and one brother, Kermit C. Fitschen of New Albin. She was preceded in death by an infant son and also by a brother who had died in infancy. Deceased will be greatly missed by numerous friends and neighbors in whose hearts she had found a definite place.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the New Albin M. E. Church, Rev. B. Kemper officiating, assisted by Rev. H. Palmer, a former pastor here. Several sacred selections were offered by the M. E. male quartet, and burial took place in the family lot in Oak Hill cemetery at Lansing.

The casket bearers were George Reburn, Roy Travis, Eric Jordan, Keneth Helland, Herman Dierkson and Mayor John LaTronche.
