A WELL KNOWN RESIDENT OF WAUKON EXPIRES
Shortly after the noon hour Thursday the report came that Peter Stevens, a resident of Allamakee county for more than a half century, was dead. It didn't seem possible. Mr. Stevens came down town after dinner on that day and in conversation with some of his friends near the First National Bank building complained of not feeling as well as usual and sat down on the steps leading to Dr. Bowen's office where he expired without, seemingly, a struggle. He was carried into the bank building and a doctor was summoned but efforts to resuscitate him proved of no avail.
Mr. Stevens was born in Allegheny, Penn., March 13, 1837. With his parents he came west when a child, and lived in Benton county, Iowa, for several years, and removed to Allamakee county in
----? For some time he lived on the Townsend farm, near Waukon, but for several years has resided in town.He was united in marriage with Miss Julia Shuff October 19, 1865. One daughter died, October 14, 1878, and the wife passed to the life beyond December 27, 1886. One daughter, Mrs. Otto J. Hager, remains to mourn the death of father. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Miriam Carlson, residing near Waukon and two brothers in California, David and James, the first named being near death's door.
He was a charter member of Bayard Lodge, Knights of Pythias and for years was a faithful officer of that lodge, and his one great delight was to meet the brethren of the lodge and meet with them in work or in social gatherings.. The religious teachings and moral precepts of the institution were to him sacred and holy. Its members were to him a band of brothers, dear to his heart. He was a good man, reliable in every trust confided to him and held in high esteem by the members of the lodge as well as the citizens of Waukon and vicinity, in general, Faithful to every trust, careful of the friends and the friendships that centered around him, the town had no better citizen and the church of God had in him a staunch friend.
for the past two years Mr. Stevens was in poor health but possessed of courage his friends hoped that he might live for many years to come, but the summons came and he answered the call, on Thursday, April 11th.
Funeral services were held Saturday forenoon at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. O. J. Hager at ten o'clock, the services being conducted by Rev. R. L. Van Nice, assisted by Rev. Caffyn. The funeral was under auspices of Bayard Lodge Knights of Pythias and the Pythian Sisters's.
A good man has gone to his reward. Nothing better could be said of such a good a man as Peter Stevens.
