Death Summons Sam Fuiks
Another Lansing pioneer, Samuel Fuiks, died at the family home on Main street Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 1:45 P. M., after two years illness with rheumatism which terminated in pneumonia. Suffering all his life with a physical handicap in his speech and walking, he never the less was able to get around for himself up to the time he was stricken with rheumatism. For many years he operated a motorboat, took out fishing and hunting parties as guide, thus acquiring a wide acquaintanceship, who will read of his passing with sorrow. Honesty, industry and thrift were leading traits or his character, which were admired by many lifelong friends.
Deceased, who never married, was born in Lansing on Nov. 26, 1864, being 75 years, 1 month and 28 days old at the time of death-thus living his entire life of three-quarters of a century in this community. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Fuiks, early day residents, and received his education in the city schools- a pupil of the late Mrs. J. J. Dunlevy, then Jennie Mc Garrity, primary teacher. The Fuiks family once owned a farm in Lafayette, still known by that name, and later for may years operated a store business in Lansing. Sam was a well known character here for may years and his familiar figure will be seen no more.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers Abe and James, surviving are three brothers and three sisters as follows: Nathan, Long Beach, California; Ike, Iowa City, Kossuth, La Crosse ; Mrs. Belle Stein, New York City; Mrs. S. A. Elsinger, Los Angles; Mrs. J. H. Magoon, Lacon, Ills.; all save Nat and Belle coming for the funeral. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Henry Marks, pastor of German Presbyterian church, were held Friday morning at the Fitschen undertaking parlor, where the body was taken following death. Rev. Marks also read the short graveside service at Oak Hill cemetery, where interment was made in the family lot beside his parent and brothers.
Casket bearers were Messrs. Art Duty, E. B. Gaunitz, Ferd Gruber, George Aschom, Fred Schafer and Helmer Aschom.
Peace to his ashes.
