Leta Louise Schutte

Visitation was held Saturday, December 15, 2007 from 3-7 p.m. at the Schutte Funeral Home, Postville, Iowa with funeral services being held at the Community Presbyterian Church, Postville, on Sunday, December 16, 2007 at 2 p.m. Pastor Gary Catterson officiated, Marian Schutte was the organist and the soloists were John O. Falb, Ronald Meyer and Kim Schutte. Casket Bearers were members of the family. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery.

Leta Louise (Dieckman) Schutte was born May 5, 1911, in Clarksville, Iowa, to Dick and Mary (Wedeking) Dieckman. She passed away Tuesday night, December 11, 2007, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa, at the age of 96 years, 7 months, and 6 days.

She graduated from Clarksville High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. Leta moved to Postville to begin working for the Masonhall family, helping in their home and at their bakery. It was here that Leta met Willard Schutte.

Leta was married to Willard Helmuth Schutte on August 25, 1934 at a Lutheran Church in Chicago, Illinois. Willard had been attending Mortuary School there. They were the parents of two children, David and Anne. They enjoyed the local activities, attended the Iowa games and in the later years, spent part of the winters in Mesa, Arizona. Leta often went to see the Cubs baseball team play there in their winter home.

Leta was active in many community clubs and activities and in the Community Presbyterian Church. She was a member there for over 50 years and served as a leader in the Presbyterian Women's organization and the John Knox Presbytery. She taught Sunday School for many years. Following Willard's death in 1969, Leta pursued her interest in the Volunteers in Mission program of the Presbyterian Church. She served for many years at the Cook Christian Training School in Tempe, Arizona, working in the kitchen, the gift shop, and in whatever capacity was needed. She also visited most of the Native American Presbyterian Missions in the southwest and in the Dakotas.

Leta also became a Volunteer in Mission at the Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, Alaska. She worked in the Museum and Gift Shop and met many people, both famous and ordinary, who stopped in to see the museum as they cruised the Alaskan waters.

Leta served for over 50 years on the Postville Public Library Board. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She became a resident of Grand Meadow Glen for several years and then the Good Samaritan Center in Postville in 2003.

Leta is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Willard (1969), two brothers: Louis (Esther) Dieckman and Herman (Grace) Dieckman; one sister Lorena (Wesley) Menefee, a sister-in-law Elizabeth Schutte who died in infancy, and a brother-in-law, Paul Schutte.

She is survived by her son, David (Karen) Schutte of Postville, a daughter Anne Swalek of Tucson, AZ; five grandchildren: James (Ellen) Schutte of Waverly, IA, Diane (Kenneth) Butikofer of Clermont, IA, Sara (Todd) Schutte Schenck of Ankeny, IA, Amy Swalek, and John (Christina) Swalek, several great grandchildren: Cody, Katie, Jacob and Hannah Schutte, Jessica and Joshua Butikofer, Connor, Cole and Carson Schenek; a sister-in-law, Marian Schutte of Postville and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for fellowship and lunch, which will be served in the church basement following the service.
