Last Rites Held for Henry Wendel
1889-1961Last rites for Henry Wendel, whose death was briefly mentioned in last week's issue of the News, were held at the local Methodist church at 2:30 p.m., on Saturday, September 23rd. The Rev. Harold Clark, pastor of the church, conducted the services. Musical selections were sung by Mr. and Mrs. Harris Greene accompanied by Miss Roberta Greene at the piano.
Henry Harrison Wendel was born October 23, 1889, to William and Barbara Hirth Wendel at Lansing, Iowa. He attended school and grew to manhood there. In 1914 he moved to the Eagle Bend area to make his home.
He was united in marriage to Rhoda Sarff at Eagle Bend on September 22, 1915. They were the foster parents of one child, Wilfred, of rural Eagle Bend.
The Wendels were engaged in farming northeast of Eagle Bend until a number of years ago when they retired and moved into town. It was then that Mr. Wendel became a painter, a profession he continued as long as he was capable of doing so. Mrs. Wendel passed away in 1957.
On November 26, 1958, Mr. Wendel and Gladys Trener of Eagle Bend were married at Clarissa, Minnesota.
Mr. Wendel, who had been in poor health for about the last six years, was active around the community, visiting with friends and relatives and never complaining, of his heart ailment. He died suddenly at his home on September 20, 1961, at approximately 8:00 a.m. of a heart seizure. He had attained the age of 71 years, 10 months and 27 days.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys; his son Wilfred on the home farm; and four grandchildren, Wayne, Wanda, Wannetta and Wendy Wendel.' Also surviving are three brothers; John of Spring Grove, Minn., Adam of Detroit, Michigan, and Frank of Tampa, Florida, as well as many friends and other relatives.
Preceding him in death were his first wife, Rhoda; and three brothers, Theodore, Elmer and Charles Wendel.
Mr. Wendel was a member of the Methodist Church.Burial was made in the Eagle Bend Cemetery. Pallbearers were: D. Lownsbury, Edward Lenz, Marl Stolp, Lloyd Grubstad, Walfred Peterson and D. N. McQuay.
Friends and relatives from out of town who attended the last rites and the luncheon served by the W.S.C.S. were: Mrs. Theda Hendrickson, Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Lownsbury, Litchfield; Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Wendel David and Mrs. Ray Stieber, Lansing, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wendel, Detroit, Michigan; Alfred Wendel, Spring Grove, Minn. Charles Wendel, Sr., and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Wendel, Thief Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wendel, Jr., Detroit Lakes; Mr. and Mrs. John Sarff, Wilkinson and Mrs. Bennie Lyseng and Anton Aasebo, Clinton; Mr. and Mrs. John Lenz, Alexanderia; and Harry Lenz of Mabel Minnesota.
