Editor Albert S. Tousley Dies From Injuries In Car Accident

Succumbs In A Des Moines Hospital following Brain Operation Tuesday

It becomes our sad duty to apprise readers of the Waukon Republican and Standard of the death this Wednesday afternoon of Albert Sherman Tousley, its editor and publisher. His death took place at Mercy hospital, Des Moines, where he was taken and had been given surgical care following the severe brain injuries and shock that he sustained in a fateful auto collision near Marshalltown on March 9, the particulars of which are generally known.

His condition had been precarious ever since, causing days of deep anxiety to loved ones and home friends, but always attended with earnest hopes for his recovery. Pneumonia develped during his enfeebled condition which the best of medical skill provided him could not overcome.

Mr. Tousley had passed his 40th birthday, having been born in St. Paul September 3, 1899. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Clark S. Tousley. His mother's death occurred on March 1, 1932, and his father is spending his remaining years at the Union Printers Home at Colorado Springs, Colo.

The son Albert graduated from the Humboldt high school, St. Paul, and then a college career ended by his graduation from the University of Minnesota. There he became identified with journalism, first by editing the college paper, and then did reportorial work on newspapers of the Twin cities, and at one time was employed on the Times-Picayune in the distant city of New Orleans. He was deeply attached to his Delta Chi college fraternity and traveled four years about the U.S. inte---- . While at Iowa City later he edited the Delta chi magazine for a number of years. He assumed the ownership of the Waukon Republican and Standard in September 1931. Its readers are aware of the ability he has shown as an editor and publisher.

He also exercised his talent as a writer by producing a meritorius volume entitled, " Where Goes the River," in which he vividly recounted a canoe trip he took from its entire course to its outlet in the Gulf of Mexico. Other sketches of local history were published by him. As a publisher he was a member of the Iowa Press Association and was closely identified with the affairs of the Northeast Iowa Press Association, serving as a director of same at the time of his death.

Acquaintances here in Waukon enjoyed his companionship, for he was jovially and neighborly disposed. His office help, termed him a most considerate "boss" and esteemed him highly. Fraternally he was a member of the Masonic order and of the local post of the Ameican Legion. Through church procedure he and Mrs. Tousley became members on Sunday last of the Presbyterian church of this city.

He was wedded to Miss Evelyn Severson of Lansing, on June 14, 1933, in St. Paul by the Reverend Harry Noble Wilson. The bereaved wife is confined to her room by a grievous injury that she received in the deplorable auto accident which caused her husband's death as well as that of their companion, Miss Mary Johnson, local teacher. Two children, Eunice Elizabeth 5, and Dorothy Adel 3, comprise the Tousley family circle which is now bereft of a devoted husband and fond parent. The deepest sympathy of this entire community attend them in their great sorrow.

At Mr. Tousley's bedside during the days of his confinement in the hospital at Des Moines were his brother Horace, of Green Bay, Wis., and sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Boughton, of Red Lake Falls, Minn.

The remains are being conveyed to Waukon tonight from Des Moines by the Martin Brothers hearse, and funeral arrangements are in abeyance until their arrival, though it is known that burial will take place in St. Paul.
