Funeral services were held Friday, Aug 23, for Hattie J. Gruenhaupt, 97, who died Tuesday, Aug 20, 1996 at the Good Samaritan Center. The Rev. Lynn Groe conducted the 11a.m. services at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery with Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Born Feb. 12, 1899 on her parents' farm in Millville. Hattie was the daughter of Louis and Josephine(Schler) Troester. She attended rural Clayton County schools. May 14, 1930 she married Henry Gruenhaupt at B.J. Palmer's Little Bit O'Heaven in Davenport. They farmed near Lansing on Village Creek for two years, then moved to Baxter, Newton, Searsboro, and in 1944 moved to Grinnell where they owned a small acreage. Hattie worked at the laundry at Grinnell College for several years, was housekeeper at Penquite Motel in Grinnell, and she and Henry were custodians at St.John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell. In 1977 they moved to Waukon. She was a member of St.John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, and a former member of St. John's Lutheran in Grinnell. Surviving are two children and their spouses, Lee and Fran Gruenhaupt of Waukon, and Ruth and Alvin Hein of Rochester, MN; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Zala Troester of Garnavillo. Hattie was preceded in death by her husband who died Dec. 4, 1982; four brothers, Charlie, Anton, Louis, and Harold Troester, and three sisters, Annie Brown, Bertha Muntzel, and Loretta Geick. Casket bearers were Raymond, Eldon, Robert, and LaVern Troester, Don Gruenhaupt and Henry Geick. Honorary bearers were Karl and Anaruth Bechtel and Elmer and Carole Alderdyce.
