Margaret Feuerhelm

Margaret Feuerhelm, 90, of Waukon died Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare in LaCrosse, WI. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 24 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Margaret Loven Feuerhelm was born January 10, 1918 in Rushford, MN, the daughter of Albert H. and Anna (Fortein) Loven. As a young girl, she moved with her family to northeast Iowa, where they farmed for a while north of Waukon and later settled in the Glenwood area. She attended the rural Hanson School and graduated from Waukon High School in 1937 after taking the normal training curriculum for teachers. Her first assignment was teaching in a one-room rural school near Glenwood.

June 25, 1939 she married Leonard Cecil Feuerhelm at the Glenwood Lutheran Church. They spent their first two years together in Minneapolis, MN before moving to Waukon, where Leonard opened Feuerhelm Iron Shop. Margaret was a homemaker and then spent many years working as a librarian at the Waukon Public Library.

Margaret was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and its ladies organizations. She was an avid reader and crossword puzzle worker and liked to play Bridge with her friends. She and Leonard shared time together playing cards, gardening and traveling extensively. They also enjoyed spending several winters in Las Vegas. More recently, Margaret has stayed active by joining the Red Hat Society and by staying in touch with friends and making greeting cards on her computer.

Survivors include a daughter, Karen (Harlan) Thompson of West Des Moines; four grandchildren, Christine Brown of Lexington, KY, Shari Sheahan of Sun Prairie, WI, Bryan (Emily) Thompson of Hong Kong, and Kathy (Dean) Knetter of Wisconsin Dells, WI; four great-grandchildren, Molly Sheahan, and Jace, Taylor and Luke Knetter; and two sisters, Irene Allison of Waukon and Evelyn Ode of Decorah. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leonard, who died in 2000; a sister, Marian Loven; and three brothers, Bill, Roger and Vernon Loven.

Casketbearers are Jack, Jeff and Jim Allison, Ed Lauerman, and Richard and Russell Loven.
