Mary Eleanor "Ellie" Corrigan
Mary E. "Ellie" Corrigan, 80, of Cedar Rapids died Thursday, February 7, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center following a brief illness. Funeral Mass was held Monday, February 11 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, with Rev. Mark Osterhaus and Rev. Gerald Condon officiating. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Ellie was born November 11, 1927 in Harpers Ferry, the daughter of Leo and Katherine (Manton) Hawes. She married Charles J. Corrigan June 4, 1947 in Wexford. She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Lansing and received her L.P.N. from Kirkwood Community College.
Ellie worked as an instructor for long distance operators for Bell Telephone for five years, bookkeeper and lunch lady for St. Matthews Catholic School for 10 years, and was a Licensed Practical Nurse at Mercy Hospital on the third floor for 29 years. She was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church, St. Matthew's Befrienders, Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, St. Matthew's Alter and Rosary Society, a charter member of the Alzheimer's Association, a bridge club member for 20 or 30 years, a member of the Red Hats, and a researcher at Watt's Medical Library.
Surviving, in addition to her husband Charles, are two sons, Patrick C. Corrigan (Meg) of Lake Elmo, MN and Michael J. Corrigan (Jerre) of Stevens Point, WI; a daughter, Linda L. Roney of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Michelle, Amy, Kyle, Cole, Bryan, and Kelly; two great grandchildren, Xander and Rylee; a brother, Bud Hawes of Lansing; three sisters, Alice Wood of San Diego, CA, Patricia Darling of LaCrosse, WI and Mona Mullarkey of Lansing.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, William and Robert Hawes; and a sister, Delores Hawes.
