Sylbert Christofferson, age 90, of Decorah, died on Sat., Nov. 30, 2002, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home following a long illness. Funeral services will be held at Decorah Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m., Fri., Dec. 6, 2002. Interment will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. Sylbert Carlyn Smith was born on Aug. 7, 1912, the daughter of Stephen S. and Alfreda (Ewing) Smith in rural Waukon. She attended rural schools in Allamakee County. Sylbert married Louis E. Christofferson Feb. 10, 1932, in Waukon. Sylbert helped care for others until she was married and then worked along side her husband on the farm. Sylbert and Louis moved to Decorah in 1956 and she then worked for the Decorah School System as a matron at the East Side School for 22 years, retiring in 1978. She enjoyed quilting and her flowers. After breaking her hip on June 5, 1998, she has been a resident of the Aase Haugen Nursing Home. Sylbert is survived by her daughter, Rita (Earl) Kern and of Decorah; one brother, Ivan (Esther) Smith of Postville; two sisters-in-law, Frances Smith of Postville and Vivian Wintrick of Rochester, Minn. Sylbert was preceded in death by her parents; husband Louis; three brothers, George, Leonard, and Arthur (Milburne) Smith; and three sisters, Cora Decker, Alice Kunkat, and Goldie Smith. Honorary casketbearers are Dean Orwoll, Harvey Houck, Stan Lensing, Marvin Pankow, Albert Peterson, George Kruchek, Wayne Thomas, and Richard Stuckman. Casketbearers are Bill Smith, Larry Smith, Stephen Smith, Warren Barr, George Decker, and Maurice Gallagher.
