Less than a year ago we chronicled the death of Mr. John Gilchrist and now we have to note the passing of the wife who, when her companion of fifty-seven years was taken from her, felt that life held very little for her, and commenced almost immediately to fade away. There seemed to be no disease that was sapping her strength, but simply a yielding up of all her powers, the health and strength which remained hers during the long illness of her husband, and which stood her in such good stead at that trying time when she was called upon to part with him. But with him gone, her very life seemed to be taken away, and now she has followed him, scarcely nine months intervening between their deaths.

Elizabeth Singleton was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, May 20, 1825. At the age Of twenty-two, in her native town, she was married to Mr. John Gilchrist. For a number of years Mr. and Mrs. Gilchrist remained in West Virginia, but in 1864, they moved to Iowa, settling in French Creek township, where they lived until 1887 when they came to Waukon to spend their declining years.

When quite young, Mrs. Gilchrist professed her faith in Christ, joining the Presbyterian church, transferring her membership first to Mt. Hope and then to Waukon.

Mrs. Gilchrist was the mother of three children, Sarah, John J. and William T., Of these, the first died when a young woman, and the second following when he was just in the prime of life. The third remains to mourn the loss of a most kind, unselfish parent.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the residence of her son with whom she has made her home since her husband's death, conducted by her pastor, Rev. VanNice, assisted by Rev. Robbins of the M.E. church. Burial was at Oakland beside her husband and with the son and daughter.
