Funeral services for Lyle Sebastian were held Wednesday, November 14, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa, with the Reverend Steve Brackett officiating. Special music was provided by Marian Schutte, organist, Stephanie Snitker, soloist and Rhonda Snitker, soloist. The Casket Bearers were Mark Baade, Steve Sebastian, Keith Sersland, Bruce Sersland, and Ron Sass, and Honorary Casket Bearers were Todd Snitker, Chris Regan, Corey Snitker, Ryan Snitker, Wendy Jewell, Chad Jewell, Stephanie Snitker, Andrew Snitker, Benji Snitker, Seth Snitker, and Calvin Snitker.
Lyle Eldo Sebastian was born November 21, 1921, to William H. and Amanda (Gericke) Sebastian, on the family farm near Luana, Iowa. He passed away Sunday, November 11, 2007, in University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics at Iowa City, Iowa, at the age of 85 years, 11 months, and 20 days.
Lyle was baptized December 27, 1921, by the Reverend R. B. Garten, in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, and confirmed there on April 5, 1936, also by the Reverend Garten. He graduated from the Luana Consolidated School in 1941. Lyle served in the 351st Engineers Regiment of the U. S. Army during World War II.
On September 8, 1945 Lyle was married to Lorraine Knutson in the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, rural, Decorah, Iowa. Two daughters were born to this union. The couple farmed near Luana, moving to Postville in 1981. Lyle helped his wife with her retail children's clothing business in Postville by making repairs and keeping the books, and other miscellaneous chores. Lyle also enjoyed working with wood and leather tooling in his spare time, and getting together with his coffee friends, affectionately called the "Old Geezers" who gathered at the Luana Tap.
Lyle is survived by his wife, Lorraine, two daughters, Sharon (Larry) Snitker, Waukon, Iowa and Kathryn (Douglas) Jewell, Highlands Ranch, Colorado, six grandchildren, Todd (Rhonda) Snitker, Christi (John) Regan, Corey Snitker, and Ryan Snitker, Wendy Jewell, and Chad (Stephanie) Jewell; five great grandchildren, Stephanie, Andrew, Benji, Seth, and Calvin; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Sebastian, Dubuque, Iowa.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Palma and her husband, J. Starr Baade, and a brother, Harold "Stub" Sebastian.
Lyle was a life-time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville.
