Clair J. Hammel
Clair J. Hammel, age 91 of Plum City, WI died Sunday, March 20, 2005 at the Plum City Care Center, Plum City. Funeral service will be held Monday, March 28 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Plum City, with Rev. Ambrose Blenker officiating. Spring burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, March 27 at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Durand and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
Clair was the son of Joseph and Nora (Pierce) Hammel. He was born in Wexford, Iowa. He grew up in the Wexford and Lansing, Iowa area. He worked on farms and in the WPA project.
Clair married Olive Glaus on June 11, 1940 in Plum City. After marriage, the farmed on the Glaus family farm for over 65 years in West Frankfort Township, Pepin County, rural Plum City. He had been a resident of the Plum City Care Center for the past year and a half.
He enjoyed baseball, whether it was in the park in Plum City or on the radio or TV. He also enjoyed boxing and football. He was an avid squirrel and deer hunter.
Clair was a dedicated and hardworking man and will be deeply missed by family and friends.
Clair is survived by his wife of 65 years, Olive; three daughters, Patricia (Robert) Chilson of Lino Lakes, MN; Phyllis (Robert) Miller of Burnsville, MN and Colleen (Richard) Hoffman of Florence, MT; two sons, Paul of Lake City, MN and Dennis of Pepin; 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Burke of Lansing; and one brother Ralph of Decorah.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mary and Marcella, four brothers, Paul, Roert, Francis and Donald; an infant daughter, Mary and a granddaughter, Tricia Miller.
