LEONARD FEUERHELM

Leonard C. Feuerhelm, 82, of Waukon, died Thurs., Dec. 7, 2000 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held on Mon., Dec. 11 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon with Rev. Lynn G. Groe and Rev. David E. Schafer officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Leonard was born June 3, 1918 in Lansing, the son of Arthur and Della (Styir) Feuerhelm. He was baptized at the Mays Prairie Church on Aug. 10, 1919 and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran on May 25, 1941. He attended grade school District No. 5 in Ludlow Township, the Waukon High School, and Waukon Jr. College.

On June 25, 1939 he married Margaret Loven at the Glenwood Lutheran Church in rural Decorah. In 1943 he attended the Vocational Training School in Minneapolis, MN, and was then employed at Toro Mfg. Co. as a foreman in defense work during WW ll. He owned and operated the Feuerhelm Iron Shop in Waukon from 1945 until his retirement in 1988.

Leonard was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, and golf. He was an active member of the Allamakee Co. Sportsman Club, Ducks Unlimited, and the Waukon Golf Club. He also enjoyed caring for his flower garden and cooking. Leonard and Margaret traveled extensively during their marriage, including trips to several other countries. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he had served as an usher and president of the church council.

Leonard is survived by his wife, Margaret, of 61 years; daughter Karen (Harlan) Thompson of West Des Moines; four grandchildren, Christine (Kenneth) Brown of Lexington, KY, Shari (James) Sheahan of DeForest, WI, Bryan Thompson of Hong Kong, and Kathy Thompson of Wisconsin Dells, WI; a great-granddaughter, Molly Sheahan, DeForest; and two sisters-in-law, Edith Feuerhelm of Postville and Sylva Feuerhelm of Waterloo.

Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, Charles and Kermit Feuerhelm.

Honorary casketbearers were Harold Halverson, Leland Meyer, LeRoy McCabe, A.V. Palmer, Dr. Frank Norden, and Everett Ellefson.

Casketbearers were Charles Bulman, Ed Lauerman, Mayhew Eaton, Edison Lenth, Horace Magnusson, and Walter Larson.

Martin Funeral Home of Waukon assisted the family.
