Funeral services for Thelma Leubka were held Saturday, October 20, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at the Schutte Funeral Home in Postville, Iowa, with Pastor Verdon Swenson officiating. Special music was provided by Joann Martins, organist and Ronald Meyer, soloist. Casket Bearers were Bernard Pausch, Marlin Pausch, Mike Thornton, Sylvan Torkelson, Thomas Lemiesz, and Mark Olson. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Thelma (Thornton) Leubka was born August 29, 1904 on a farm north of Castalia, Iowa, to Henry and Elizabeth (Heckman) Thornton. She passed away Monday, October 15, 2007, in the Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo, Iowa, at the age of 103 years old.

She attended the rural schools in the Castalia, Ossian, and Frankville areas and graduated from Postville High School in 1924. Following her graduation, Thelma taught in the Monona, Frankville, and Cresco schools for ten years.

On January 1, 1930 she was married to Elmer William Leubka at Austin, Minnesota. To this union two children were born. Thelma and Elmer farmed in the Postville Junction area for 41 years and then moved to Postville. In 1988 Thelma moved to Mott Manor and lived there until December of 2001, when she moved to Marengo, Iowa and became a resident of the Rose Haven Nursing Home.

Thelma was active in the United Brethren Church in Postville, holding many church offices and was a member of the Ladies Aid Society until the church closed. She became a member of the United Methodist Church in Castalia, Iowa. She also participated in the Junction Jolly Workers Club while she lived on the farm. She enjoyed gardening and raising flowers. Thelma always cared about her extended family and enjoyed the gatherings that were held at her home. She also enjoyed traveling whenever she had the opportunity to do so.

Survivors include her daughter, Donna (Dave) Reese, Loves Park, Illinois, her son, David (Denise) Leubka, Williamsburg, Iowa, four grandchildren, Ellen (Mark) Olson, Ann Reese (Ali Khashogji), Beth (Tom) Lemiesz, and Kristen Leubka, and nine great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer in 1988: three brothers, Johnny Thornton, Wilbur Thornton, and Albert Thornton, and six sisters, Nellie Jennings, Ethel Shellhammer, Florence Pausch, Wilma Thornton, Lydia Thornton, and a sister who died in infancy.
