Funeral services for Hazel Pape were held Friday, August 31, 2007 at 11:00 a. m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, with the Reverend Steve Brackett officiating. Special music was provided by Marian Schutte, organist and Kim Schutte, Soloist. The Casket Bearers were Stanley Dull, Dave Dull, Brad Dull, Lee Horstman, Steve Pape, and Danny Pape. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.
Hazel Lena (Paulsen) Pape was born October 9, 1922, on a farm in Clayton County, south of Luana, Iowa, to Ernst Theodore and Alma (Funk) Paulsen. She passed away Friday, August 24, 2007, at the home of her daughter, Lorna and son-in-law, Rick Ruckdaschel, in Wichita, Kansas. She was 84 years old.
Hazel was baptized October 29, 1922 by the Reverend H. P. Kumpf in St. John Lutheran Church in Luana and confirmed March 21, 1937 by the Reverend R. B. Garten in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville.
On October 29, 1943 Hazel was married to Lorenz John Pape in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville by the Reverend Frederick R. Ludwig. To this union a son, Lorenz, Jr. (Buddy) and two daughters were born, Linda and Lorna. They farmed until 1971 when they moved to Postville, where Hazel enjoyed the company of many special friends and neighbors. Hazel especially enjoyed working in her yard, tending to her beautiful tulips that bloomed every spring for the enjoyment of those who passed by. Following her retirement from Monona Wire, Hazel spent several years working at her favorite hobby - that of stained glass art work. She had her own shop called "The Glass House," where she made custom pieces for friends and neighbors. She especially enjoyed making stained glass angels and became know as the "Angel Lady."
Following the death of her husband, Lorenz in 1999, Hazel spent the winter months in Wichita and San Diego with her daughters. Her family was the light of her life and gave her many opportunities for travel to special family events over the years. She was especially proud of her grandchildren and two great granddaughters who called her "Great Mama." Hazel was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lorenz, a son, Lorenz Jr. "Buddy" Pape, two brothers, Henry Paulsen and Harold Paulsen, and a sister, Hilda Horstman.
Surviving are her family, Linda (Denis) Baldwin, San Diego, CA, Lorna (Rick) Ruckdaschel, Wichita, KS, two grandchildren, Erin Ruckdaschel, Wichita, KS and Eric (Keegan) Ruckdaschel, Encinitas, CA, two great grandchildren, Charlie Rose and Ella Grace Ruckdaschel, a brother, Harvey (Marge) Paulsen, Elgin, IA, and two sisters-in-law, Henrietta (Robert) Dull.
