Cathy attended the Waukon high School. She was married to Joe Troendle and their children are Chad, Audrey, Michele, and Jason.

On August 2, 1986 Cathy was married to Kermit Miller at the Forest Mills United Methodist Church, rural Postville, by Pastor Verdon Swenson. Kermit and Cathy lived in Postville where she managed their Rental Housing, Insurance, and Real Estate office. She was a licensed insurance agent with a CSIR designation. She opened the local antique store, "The Millstone Emporium", operating the store and buying and stocking the merchandise, a business she really enjoyed. Cathy helped many of the immigrants in adjusting to their new life in Postville by finding furnishings for their homes, teaching them local customs, and how to find their way around the area. She assisted some in starting their own business. Cathy was interested in the community and served in many ways to promote its growth.

Cathy was involved in fund raising for the Cancer Society, including the local Pancake breakfast and "Jail and Bail" program which raised money for the local chapter.

She enjoyed her garden and flowers and mowing the lawn. Her family remembers that she always tried to make work fun and would often bring along a picnic lunch. Cathy kept a special drawer in the kitchen full of candy for the grandchildren. She also enjoyed fixing up and decorating the rental apartments, making them attractive so that they would feel like home to the occupants.

Cathy especially loved the Christmas season and collected Santas and ornaments that would remind her of the holidays all year long.
