RURAL POSTVILLE FARMER DIES WHILE PUMPING FLOOD
WATER FROM BASEMENTBradley Brainard, 56, of rural Postville, died Sunday, August 19, while working to rid a farm home basement of flood water. Brad was found Sunday in the flooded basement of his late father's home at 712 Yellow River Drive, Postville.
Heavy rains over the previous weekend had caused the basement to flood. The house was currently unoccupied and Brad was working to keep the flood waters in check. The entrance to the basement was through a trap door and there was likely little ventilation in the space.
According to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Ankeny, Brainard drowned after being overcome with carbon monoxide poisoning while he was attempting to pump water out of the basement.
Brainard, a lifelong Postville area resident and farmer, is survived by his mother, Shirley and siblings, Sylvia Brainard, Roger (Julie) Brainard, Bruce (Deb) Brainard, Georgianne (Ron) Kaiser and Catherine (Larry) Dostal.
A 1969 graduate of Postville High School, Brad was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and served on the Board of Directors of Postville Farmers Cooperative.
Services for Bradley Brainard were held Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church. See the complete obituary inside today's Herald-Leader.
