Dennis Runge

Dennis John Runge, 67, of Eugene, OR, formerly of Waukon, died Saturday, July 21, 2007 in Eugene following a battle with pancreatic cancer. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 27 at 11 a.m. at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating. Burial will be at the Runge Timber Prairie in rural Calumet. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Dennis John Runge was born October 2, 1939 in Cherokee, the son of John H. and Lorraine Emma (Lange) Runge. He graduated from Calumet High School in 1957. His outstanding high school basketball career led to a scholarship at the University of Iowa, where he continued his education and earned a BS in education.

August 13, 1960 he married Joan Marguerite Harms of Archer. In the years to come they would raise three children. Dennis enjoyed a 35-year teaching career with stops in McGregor, Emmetsburg and Waukon. In addition to his teaching career, he also coached and officiated several different sports.

While living in Waukon, he also served 25 years as a seasonal park ranger at Effigy Mounds National Monument in Marquette. Dennis and Joan retired to Oregon in 1996, where they enjoyed following the Oregon women's basketball team coached by their daughter. He also worked in the Pro shop at Fiddlers Green Golf Course in Eugene.

Dennis was a long time member of the "I" Club and Letterman's Association of the University of Iowa. During his time in Waukon he was an active member of Zion United Church of Christ, serving two terms as president of the Church Council.

Survivors include his wife Joan of Eugene, OR; three children, Jody Runge of Portland, OR, and Brian (Hope) Runge and Deann Hagensick, both of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren, Renee Catherine Runge and Kelsie Ann Hagensick; and a sister, Julie (Bob) Rehder of Newell. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Casketbearers are Bud Strike, Don Angel, Ken Lampman, Jerry Siegrist, Steve Paul and Randy Erion. Honorary casketbearers are Bob Sampson, Jim Wooden, Dave Duncklee, Bill Blagsvedt, Kirby Range, Tom Munson and Brian Gifford.
