Viola Winkie, 92, of Waukon, died Monday, October 28, 2002, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 31, at 10:00 a.m. at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon, with Rev. Larry Gander officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Viola Winkie was born August 19, 1910, on the Ludlow Township, rural Waukon farm of her parents, Fred and Lena (Klepper) Duvel. She was baptized and confirmed at Salem United Church of Christ and attended Ludlow #4 rural school. On November 14, 1935, she married Rueben F. Winkie at her parents' home in Ludlow Township. They farmed together in Ludlow for 42 years before moving to Waukon in 1977. An active member of Zalmona Presbyterian Church, Viola took part in Miriam Circle, Presbyterian Women, and helped with crafts for Bible School. She was a volunteer at Good Samaritan Center for over 40 years as well as being involved with the Martin Luther Home phone program and being an adopted grandparent for the first grade class at the Waukon Elementary School. She was a loyal supporter of community events, loved to visit with her friends and neighbors, and was well known for baking rosettes at Christmas time. Survivors include a son, Gary (Marlene) Winkie of Rockford, Ill.; a daughter-in-law, Mary Pierce of Marion; six grandchildren, Julie (Bill) Crist of Marshfield, Wis., Doug (Cheri) Winkie of Caledonia, Ill., Ann (Marty) Cowen of Naperville, Ill., and Denise (Dennis) Wilmoth, Danelle (Roger) Camey, and Dariette (Mike) Madison, all of Marion; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Bernice Duvel of Waukon; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Rueben; a son, Dennis; and two brothers, Clarence and Milton Duvel. Casket bearers are Bill Crist, Doug Winkie, Marty Cowen, Dennis Wilmoth, Roger Carney, and Mike Madison.
